Catch The Wave Retreat - Year 9
“Let’s dip our toes in the ocean”
On Wednesday this week at JPC, our Year 9 students participated in Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Australia (CSYMA) Catch the Wave retreat within their House groups. This was the next step in their retreat experiences at JPC, and revolved around diving into what faith can look like for young people, which was beautifully shared by the group of visiting Youth Ministers through their testimonies.
All our students embraced the opportunity to join in the fun games and charades, which got the whole group involved – they embraced the day, and actively participated in all the activities run by our wonderful Youth Ministers from the Archdiocese.
Each student experienced
- a chance to reflect on the unique life for which they have been created - a life with the potential to change the world through their actions and faith;
- the testimonies of other young people who live their lives in this way;
- an exploration of their own value-system and how they are approaching life;
Our Year 9s have been invited to participate in the Youth Ministry Elective in the Religious Education course next semester, and 3/4 of the cohort has already signed up for this, so it will be an exciting program!
On behalf of the teachers and Caitlyn, our own JPC Youth Minister, we are so proud of how our Year 9 students actively participated so enthusiastically in the events and discussions. The feedback from our students was that it was a fantastic day and we hope they walked away with a new perspective on the role of faith in their lives. Please discuss your Year 9 child’s experience with them.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
Student Feedback
The “Catch the Wave” was a great experience for us to reflect on our connection with God and give us a perspective on how important youth ministry is and what it can do for us. The youth ministers made us all feel welcome and connected with us.
No matter where you were on your faith journey the people hosting the event still cared for everyone and made us feel accepted. I believe that this expression was used to teach us that faith is a journey and that you might not be there now but if you give it some time you will arrive at your destination.
(It was) a way of connecting people with other people. I really enjoyed the experience from A to Z and everything about it was really good.
The Catch the Wave experience was insightful and engaging, in the way that they encouraged the people even if they did not believe in God, that they are always wanted, needed and are built for more than they think.
There was an opportunity for us to reflect on a letter to someone who is special in our heart whether that was God, parental figures and friends. The games and engaging drama performance made the audience a part of what was happening and allowed them to give their own opinions on the topic. They gave reasons for these games so that they weren’t to waste time.
I enjoyed the experience with the fun activities and moral compasses thrown throughout the sessions and taught all of us the importance of what we believe we can do and what great things we can and are made to do.

Vinnies CEO Sleepout - 17 June 2021
Dear Parents and Carers,
The Vinnies Sleep Out is on 17 June and once again I will be joining CEO’s Vinnie’s Sleepout from across the Canberra area to raise awareness of the plight of homeless people. On this same night, a large number of brave students and staff will also be enduring the cold to raise money for this important charity.
I think it is very pertinent, that in a week where we have experienced Canberra’s bitter winter nights and wet and cold days with icy winds that we stop and think of the 116,000 (ABS, 2016) homeless people who currently do not have a permanent safe place to sleep. Particularly concerning is the number of young people between 15 and 19 who, in Canberra, are homeless. As Canberrans, we are all aware of escalating rental costs which are putting enormous pressure on families and resulting in more people becoming homeless.
This will be my eighth year of sleeping out and, as many of you are aware, the JPC community has supported the event through raising money and sleeping out over those years.
Thank you for your support of us. Over the years we have raised almost $65,000 for this worthy cause. We look forward to adding to this amount in 2021. Individual students may have asked you to sponsor them. If not, please feel free to sponsor me by clicking on the link below.

Some of our wonderful Year 9/10 Photography Media students have entered the Head on Student Photography Awards 2021. The Student Award is open to Australia’s young photographers (school years K-12) and there are some incredible prizes up for grabs. Finalists and winners will be announced at the Festival launch in November 2021. Photographs selected as finalists will be exhibited in the Head On Photo Festival 2021 and a printed catalogue. Our JPC students have entered some incredible work, all using very different techniques of composition, lighting and editing.
If you are interested to see more of their work there are lots of photographs posted around the Tech hub in the VT area of the school. https://www.headon.com.au/student-awards.
The ASC Cross Country was recently held at Mount Stromlo running track with St John Paul II College sending a small, yet, competitive team.
The morning was crisp with the sun due to come out, our runners were blessed with what could be described as perfect running conditions. Of our team, we have had 8 students qualify for the ACT Championship to be held on the 16th June.
Well done to all that competed and good luck to those who qualified.

Bill Turner Cup - Next Stop Albury
Bill Turner Cup Game v Karabar, AIS Synthetic Field, Thursday 10 June.
The JPC boys are champions of the Southern NSW / ACT area of the Bill Turner Cup with a comprehensive victory over Queanbeyan’s Karabar High on Thursday. Playing in front of the biggest crowd of proud parents yet, the boys faced off on a very cold and almost snowy day, attempting to emulate the exploits of JPC’s 2018 team in reaching the Inter-area playoffs in Albury.
JPC played fast and composed football, with clever passing through the midfield creating plentiful chances. The quick interplay was a delight to watch with Josh, Will and Pat Rowley regularly troubling their defenders early in the game with their smooth play and crisp passing.
JPC Keeper Gabe was a lonely figure as Karabar barely had the ball or entered JPC’s half. Tana and Joe controlled the midfield with their defence – harrying, tracking and tackling the Karabar boys into submission and Ryan, Noah, Harry, Cadel, Conor and Charlie not only quickly shut down Karabar’s potential attacks but made decisive runs for and excellent passes to the midfield.
JPC’s dominance of possession was rewarded when some excellent passing between the forwards and a great cross from Josh M led to a well taken goal at the far post by Pat Rowley. Pat doubled his tally later in the half to give JPC a 2-0 lead at halftime.
With the job not done yet, the boys were warned against complacency at halftime. The continued effort and energy of the boys paid dividends in the second half with Pat’s cracking shot crashing into the top corner to give him a well-deserved hat-trick and a great finish from Josh giving JPC a comfortable 4-0 lead. Goals from hard running striker Toby Robson and debutant Cadel put a large buffer between the teams. The final goal from skipper Joe – a cracking shot that swirled and dipped into the corner shot about 30 yards out - after a slaloming run from Harry Rowley from the back, was the icing on the cake in the 7-0 thrashing.
Well done to all the boys for their effort and sublime play, with the starters supported well by Mr Utility Anakin, Super-Sub and JPC’s favourite closer, back up keeper Edan and Shrey ‘fast feet’ Patel.
Next STOP – Albury and the round of 32!

On Tuesday evening, the music department ran two huge music concerts. These concerts showcased the talents and hard work of every music student at JPC. These ranged from rock bands, concert bands, vocal groups and solo performers. All of which could not have sounded so incredible without the amazing tech crew. Aron and I are so proud of all the students for performing and would like to thank everyone in the audience for coming to support the students. Most of them were playing just for the end of term concert but there were a few brave seniors who chose to perform their assessment piece on the night which sounded amazing.
A huge thank you to our music teachers Matt Lustri, John Burgess and Matthew Foster for attending the concerts and playing with the students. Your dedication to our students and the music program is very much appreciated. Our amazing emcee Genevieve Beckett delivered a smile as she introduced each group on the night, and what a fabulous job she did. A huge thank you to Catherine Ray for coming to support us and the students at both concerts and for the kind words after each one. I would also like to thank Aron Lyon for being such an amazing musical colleague, I’m so lucky to work with a like-minded, passionate musician. Last but not least, thank you to the students for making our jobs such a pleasure to wake up to each morning.

Worry & Anxiety Self-Help Program for Students
Starting week 2 Next term our School Counsellor, Ame Uidam, will be offering students the opportunity to participate in a self-help program to learn information and skills to cope with worry and anxiety in everyday life, called The Brave Program.
This program has been developed by researchers and mental health professionals at the University of Queensland, it offers evidence-based strategies for worry and anxiety, and there is no cost to participate.
Interested students will progress through a series of online workshops, with associated activities to complete independently, over a suggested period of six-weeks. In addition to this, participating students will have access to a brief weekly ‘check-in’ with the School Counsellor to help understand and apply the online content and support students to problem-solve challenges they may face during this program.
Since The Brave Program is a brief self-help style intervention, it is designed for young people who struggle with worries or anxious thoughts that seem to compound or escalate quickly, and other mild-to-moderate level anxiety symptoms. Brief self-help style programs are generally not suitable for young people experiencing severe anxiety (including OCD or PTSD), or other severe mental health concerns. If you are unsure whether this program is right for you/your child, please contact the School Counsellor to discuss.
Students wanting to participate in The Brave Program in Term 3 should use this link to register: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WHF2QTH
Registrations close end of Term 2, Friday 25th June 2021.

Important Cocurricular Band Information
Dear families,
What is happening
Due to changes in music administration, we will now no longer be able to accept new students into bands in the first weeks of each term. All details and payment will be required by the end of the previous term, in order to have students’ details noted and band times set up in the updated school attendance system.
What you need to do – new to band program
If your child is interested in joining a cocurricular band for Term 3 2021, please ensure you have submitted an Expression of Interest form, found on the JPC website, by the second last week of this term (that is, by Friday 18 June.)
You will then be contacted by the music department, who will confirm which band/s your child will be in and their rehearsal time/s. Your child’s details will be updated to the Qkr! system, and you will then be able to pay the cocurricular band fee for the term via Qkr!.
What you need to do – continuing in the band program from Term 2
If your child is already in a cocurricular band, you don’t need to fill in an expression of interest form – please ensure, however, that you have paid your child’s Term 3 cocurricular music fees via Qkr!
Any questions, please email music@jpc.act.edu.au
Thank you for your patience as we move to this new system.
Your friendly Music Team
