Dear Parents and Carers,

The Vinnies Sleep Out is on 17 June and once again I will be joining CEO’s Vinnie’s Sleepout from across the Canberra area to raise awareness of the plight of homeless people. On this same night, a large number of brave students and staff will also be enduring the cold to raise money for this important charity.

I think it is very pertinent, that in a week where we have experienced Canberra’s bitter winter nights and wet and cold days with icy winds that we stop and think of the 116,000 (ABS, 2016) homeless people who currently do not have a permanent safe place to sleep. Particularly concerning is the number of young people between 15 and 19 who, in Canberra, are homeless. As Canberrans, we are all aware of escalating rental costs which are putting enormous pressure on families and resulting in more people becoming homeless.

This will be my eighth year of sleeping out and, as many of you are aware, the JPC community has supported the event through raising money and sleeping out over those years.
