Year 9 & 10 Electives 2022
It may seem early, but we are already looking to determine our electives for Years 9 and 10 for 2022.
- Students currently in Years 8 and 9 nominate eight (8) preferences the four (4) Electives that they will take next year. This data feeds directly into the creation of the 2022 timetable. Student selections determine if specific electives run and how many classes of each elective are filled, limited by the availability of specialist rooms and teachers.
- Student allocations will be communicated and students may request a change dependent on space and other student movements (Term 4).
It is anticipated that there will be no movement of students between electives at the start of 2022.
Given the timetable is created around student selections, it is important that students consider their choices seriously. It should also be noted that there are no prerequisites moving into senior College (Years 11 and 12), so students are encouraged to select broadly and experience a range of subjects. However, many electives have two units on offer that, depending on student choice, can allow keen students to effectively choose to complete a year-long subject, or to take one in Year 9 and another in Year 10.
Students will be emailed their login details for Web preferences during Week 2 and they will be instructed to select 8 preferences. Ideally, students would get their first 4 preferences, however, in reality, some lower preferences will need to be accessed and they should be carefully considered. No student will be allocated an elective not on their list. Students who do not make their selection by the deadline may be allocated to available spaces once the timetable is created.
Week 2, Friday 23 July: Web Preferences open to students to select electives – unit descriptions can be accessed through this program.
Week 4, Monday 2 August: Web Preferences close to students.
Term 4: Publication of allocations; one week opportunity to reselect two (2) electives.
Dear Parents and Carers,
We would like to inform the JPC community that during the first week of the holiday's a JPC student was diagnosed with Shingles (Herpes Zoster).

NAIDOC Week 2021 - Heal Country
JPC began NAIDOC week celebrations with a poster competition. Congratulations to winning entries by Alivia Holden, Sophia Hawkins and Neve O’Byrne (who received NAIDOC Hoodies) and special mentions to Nikala, Lily and Milli. The posters are displayed in the school foyer. Our Indigenous group discovered that the ACT region was once covered with the native ‘Murnong’ plant (Yam Daisy), so in keeping with this year’s NAIDOC theme, we planted one in our JPC garden.
We have been fortunate to receive a grant from Greening Australia with funding from Suncorp - Brighter Futures Program, for 30 native plants for our exciting new collaborative project underway with Nat Tarry and Beau Nebelung’s Construction students, making our Bush tucker garden design a reality. It will be complete before term’s end - very exciting! We also created our own Yam Daisy artworks to display in the Kamberri room.
Our Indigenous students attended the CE NAIDOC mass and a beautiful smoking ceremony in Manuka on Friday morning to round off the week. Thank you to all involved in embracing and celebrating our Indigenous cultures at JPC.

As the week comes to an end most of our staff and students completing the ration challenge will be done! It has been amazing to see how well they have gone and it’s great to see how passionate the students are about why they are actually taking part in the challenge.
We have reached just shy of $9200 so far. If you would like to make a donation the link is https://schools.rationchallenge.org.au/t/st-john-paul-ii-college.

Work Experience Review – Amisha Sehgal and Dariy Guzairov
Two of our Year 12 students were successful in obtaining a place in the Australian Signals Directorate work experience program during the holidays. Well done!
Amisha: “I wanted to know if cyber security is the pathway I should take on as a potential career. I enjoyed everything but more specifically learning about geospatial analysis and utilising geospatial tools for imagery analysis. Furthermore, I also learnt how important Maths is in most of the activities we did which were fascinating to see how Maths helped in finding solutions. Teamwork and communication was an important factor in solving a problem and reaching a solution. When challenges were faced, communication and further research was key to solving the problem. The Work Experience further convinced me to pursue a career in the ICT area. It has also provided me more clarity for my future decisions.”
Dariy: “I developed a lot of new skills that I can now use. It was different to how I expected it to work, as it was a government job, I didn't know much about it. I think my future career choices has expanded thanks to this work experience program.”
