Message from Kathleen Garvie - Assistant Principal
Today Australia celebrates World Teachers’ Day’. As a community, we know the impact one teacher can have on the life of a child. The importance of surrounding our children with people that care not only for their education but also for their wellbeing. The Australian Teacher Workforce Data 2021 Report into Teacher workforce characteristics ‘reported teachers worked an average of 140-150% of their paid hours’. Our teachers are not exempt from this, and on this day, we take our ‘hats off’ to our teachers who especially over the past two years have demonstrated dedication, hard work and resilience. To the teachers in our community and those who support them, we say thank you.
We have had a busy time as a community raising funds for those in need. At the JPC Feast Day students raised over $2000. This week at school students have been busy fundraising for Socktober. Socktober is a nation-wide Catholic Mission fundraiser, held in October, which supports families and young people in developing countries with basic needs. Thank you to everyone who has gotten involved. As a College, we have raised $1200 over the past two weeks. The next focus for our College will be the St Vincent de Paul Christmas appeal, where we will be asking for donations of food, gifts and other Christmas items, to support those who live in Gungahlin and other areas of Canberra, for whom Christmas is a difficult time. Students are asked to keep an eye on Sentral messages for when this collection will begin.
Soon our Year 10-12 students will be starting their exams. For some, this will be their first experience of sitting an exam and for others, it will be their last at the College. It is important to remember that no matter what stage you are at, that you continue to develop your study techniques and try your best. Some tips that may help students include: Start studying early (small repeated chunks of study can help move information to the long term memory, as opposed to one big session); don’t underestimate the importance of a good breakfast/lunch, to give your brain energy to work; if you need help or don’t understand a concept, come and see you teacher before your exams; the power of prayer when you are nervous or anxious about how your exam is going to go (as we see in today’s Gospel reading). We wish all students well as we enter a busy time in the term.

Assistant Principal
High School Musical - Auditions
JPC’s 2023 musical production is Disney’s High School Musical. The production will run Term 3, Week 4 Thursday 10th August – Saturday 12TH August 2023. There will be opportunities for students to perform, create sets and be part of the backstage or tech crew.
This week, the first round of auditions was held with great success! The students who have auditions this year will be offered a role that caters to their best abilities, to let their talents shine. The energy was high and students have already demonstrated their growth mindset
We are extremely excited to present next year’s musical production and look forward to seeing our community come together to be part of the WILDCATS team!

Staff V Year 12's - Volleyball
Our annual Staff V Students sporting events continue to thrive this year. Our Courage Captains Derick and Gaby have worked really hard to ensure this end-of-year fun is competed as hard as possible, for as long as possible, with as much fun as possible! Last week saw us play Futsal to raise over $200 for Socktober, this week we decided to play a sport that no one really had much experience in on either the Staff or students team.
As it turned out the staff dominated this week taking the win in all 3 games. A huge thank you to the staff who donned their runners to form a sporting allegiance against our most senior students.
Next week will see the teams compete in both Netball and Basketball (because we couldn’t decide between them!) Netball on Wednesday and Basketball on Friday to finish off the week.

Parents will have access to their student’s Timetables, attendance, school reports, assessment results and more through the portal.

Event description
Vaping, the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or 'vapes'), continues to be an issue that attracts a great deal of attention as well as debate across the country.
Vaping is a new phenomenon, with the first e-cigarette being invented in 2003. As a result, many parents have little or no experience with this issue as the devices simply weren’t around when they were in their teens.
This session will examine what we currently know about the use of e-cigarettes and vaping amongst Australian school-based young people. This is an area that is constantly changing and parents attempting to make sense of the information provided by both the ‘pro-vaping’ and ‘anti-vaping’ lobbies may find it extremely difficult to navigate.
As we move towards the end of the school year parents are likely to need as much assistance as possible.
Cost: $25.00 plus GST
This event will be hosted on Zoom and we will email you the link leading up to the event.
This event will be live-streamed but, for those unable to attend live, a recording of the event will also be made available for a period following the event's conclusion.
IMPORTANT: If buying tickets for multiple people, make sure to enter each of their email addresses so everyone will receive a link to the Zoom meeting.
