Message from Catherine Rey, Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
It was wonderful to welcome all of our students back in a whole-school assembly on Monday. After several years of not being able to meet together, to have the whole student community come together is very special.
We are also looking forward to celebrating our Feast Day next Friday together- not having been able to do this together for the last two years. We are very privileged to have Archbishop Christopher Prowse come to celebrate Mass with us, alongside either Fr Mark or Fr Thon and there will be lots of fun House and whole school community activities scheduled as well. The older students will remember that PC groups hold stalls in the afternoon. We all have lots of fun together and the money raised goes to one of our charities. Tickets will be sold next week for the afternoon stalls. As in previous years, we pre-purchase these tickets and use them in the afternoon (see Feast Day Message below).
I thanked the students at the assembly for the efforts they had made during Term 3 with regard to our behavioural expectations and our expectations for ILT. We are looking forward to building on the momentum created and expecting a very positive Term 4 and end of year.
As you are well aware, Term 4 is a big term with regard to assessment. I encouraged all students to begin this term as they mean to go on. It is a great opportunity to put in place homework schedules and to implement growth mindset strategies as they begin a new term. On Tuesday during our Mentor lesson, students developed goals for the term under the headings of Head (academic), Heart (relationships), Hands (community) and Spirit (values, self-awareness, spiritual life). We are using a hard copy booklet this term during our Mentor lesson to help guide students in monitoring their academic progress and reflecting on our values and important aspects of life at JPC. Mentor teachers are keeping these booklets from week to week to ensure they are not misplaced by students.
During the assembly, I strongly encouraged each of our students to expect more of themselves academically and to be prepared to take academic risks - to try things that perhaps they have not done previously. It could be participating in discussions, developing informed opinions, being prepared to be wrong. I urged them to not just drift with good intentions but to take positive action. I know that you will encourage them in a similar way at home.
Alongside the strong academic focus, there are lots of inspiring activities happening. Last night, the Netball End of Season Presentation Night was held – a wonderful way of congratulating those students who participated and celebrating their success.
Today, 75 of our students performed at Floriade. It is a great tribute to our music staff and to the students themselves. Many different groups performed for an hour and a half. I am so proud of them. They bring great credit to JPC. There are some great photos and video footage. You will see them in our Key Messages next week and hear the detail of what was a great day.
I wish you all a very good term.

JPC Feast Day
Friday
21 October 2022
On Friday, 21 October (Week 2), the JPC community will celebrate the Feast Day of St John Paul II. We take this day to celebrate the life of St John Paul II, and to recognise all that he brings to JPC as our College Patron, and we are excited to be able to celebrate together.
Over the day, students will participate in an inter-house competition, celebrate Mass with the Archbishop, share a celebratory cake with their House, and enjoy an afternoon of fun games and activities organised by the Houses.
Students need to wear their usual, formal school uniform until after Mass (including blazers for Seniors), but are able to change into PE uniform and House colours for the games in the afternoon.
To enjoy the games in the afternoon, students need to pre-purchase tickets.
These tickets are on sale near the Front Office at lunch each day – $5 for 10 – from Friday 14th to Thursday 20th October.
All funds raised will go to charities supported by the College.
Year 10 Certificate Information
This week all students in Year 10 will receive a draft copy of their Year 10 Certificate information. Both students and parents are required to review the information, using the instructions at the bottom of the draft. If there are any inaccuracies or concerns please note these on the document and they will be followed up. Then sign where indicated and return it to your house LWB. All forms are due back returned by Friday Week 2.
Kind regards
Belinda Hammond

JPC Hats - Compulsory in Term 4
Reminder for all families that as we move into Term 4 and the weather is beginning to warm up slowly, it is the expectation that when students are using the playground at recess and lunch that they are wearing a suitable JPC hat.
We have a limited number of spare hats here at school so we strongly encourage students to bring their own hat in so they can enjoy the weather and playground.

SPORTING SPOTLIGHT

Waterpolo
Georgia Ellison, Yr 11 Van Thuan attended the 17&U Girls Water Polo National State Championships on the Gold Coast where she had a great tournament, helping lead her team to 6th place. Her efforts were recognised with her selection on the Australian Youth Women's Squad at the end of the tournament.
Hamish Ellison, Yr 9 Van Thuan attended the 15&U Boys Water Polo National State Championships in Melbourne, and he played a fantastic tournament. He was ACT team Captain, his team won bronze (winning against Western Australia 8-4), and he was the highest goal scorer in the competition. He was named as part of the Australian Cadet Men's Squad at the end of his tournament.
We are very proud of their achievements and wish them both luck for their national (and potentially international) opportunities thanks to their inclusion on these squads.
Dance
Over the first week of the holidays, I competed at the Brisbane International Contemporary Dance Prix, the largest pre-professional contemporary dance competition in Australia. Over the week I took classes with artists and directors from leading dance schools and companies around Australia, Europe and New Zealand, alongside the top 90, 15-21 year-old dancers who were accepted via audition. After a full on week in a professional dance environment surrounded by people mostly already in full-time training receiving some great commendations and constructive criticism, I was lucky enough to be selected to interview with Sydney Dance Company and WAAPA.
While equity rules as a university meant WAAPA could not offer me a place as a prize, I was lucky to receive some one-on-one commendations and feedback from one of their lecturers and head of Diploma of Dance (Classical Ballet), Kim McCarthy.
I am still waiting to hear from Sydney Dance Company about whether they are going to offer me a place in their pre-professional year but had a very promising interview with the Head of Training, Linda Gamblin.
Even without all the results, the experience was still extremely rewarding and I took a lot out of it.
