Message from Catherine Rey, Principal
Another end of term…
Another end of term and the year is certainly speeding by. It has been a term of growth for many of our students in all sorts of ways.
Our Year 7 students finally experienced the joys and challenges of their Year 7 Camp. We were really pleased that this was able to take place, albeit at a time very different to other years. The camp is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to challenge themselves in all sorts of ways – whether it is the challenge of being away from home, needing to work with other students they don’t know well or the physical challenges they face. It is carefully constructed to provide a challenge without being overwhelming and our teachers were very proud of the way our Year 7s rose to the occasion.
Our senior students have also shown great growth this term. For the Year 12 tertiary students, the ACT Scaling Test and the preparation leading to it provided a great challenge. It was impressive to chart the growth that they made from week to week as they tackled new ways of solving problems and attacked unfamiliar questions with increasing confidence. Their support of each other was another very positive element of the efforts that they made, realising that the success of all depended on the success of each individual.
Our senior accredited students have also been testing themselves and fostering their own growth – through their part-time jobs, extra training in areas such as barista training or white card and asbestos training or, for some, already beginning some outside study tailored to their career aspirations.
We are very proud of them all. As they return for a short Term 4 before exams begin, I urge them all to keep up their motivation and their efforts. It is difficult to do so as they see the end of the year approaching and the weather warming but these final weeks can make a huge difference – either positively or negatively – to their overall academic results. We will do our best to support them and I know that you will do the same at home.
Our musicians have also done themselves proud in recent weeks. We have loved their performances and the talent that they have shown. I would like to extend our appreciation to their music tutors, Aron Lyon and to Sharon Robinson. They go above and beyond to cater for the individual aspirations and talents of each of our music students and it is very exciting to see the progress that individuals have made this year.
Caring for Creation
We were privileged to host the “Caring for Creation” Conference at JPC last weekend. It was a Canberra-wide event organised by our own Holy Spirit Parish. Alison Weeks and her incredibly dedicated team of volunteers brought an ambitious vision to reality, with an impressive program and keynote speakers. Jacqui Remond, former National Director of Earthcare Australia and co-founder of the Global Catholic Climate Movement, was inspiring in bringing alive Pope Francis’s encyclical “Laudato Si”. The encyclical outlines the concept of Integral Ecology, which outlines an integrated and holistic approach to political, social, economic and environmental problems. It puts the urgency of the need to care for our planet into the context of the need to care for all of God’s creation and for those who are most disadvantaged by the current state of our world.
For me, the conference was a call to action. We can easily feel that these problems are too overwhelming for individuals and small communities to make a difference. However, each one of us has a responsibility to bring justice to our immediate community and to the wider world. Our young people are only too aware of the state of the world that they inherit. We need to work with them, firm in the belief, that we can make a difference and we need to make a difference. The catch cry “think global, act local” is very pertinent.
Thank you all for your support of us this term. I wish you all a happy holiday with the opportunity for some relaxed family time.
Warm regards,
Catherine Rey
On Tuesday evening we ran an Instrumental concert for all the students at JPC who receive private music lessons. These students have been working hard with their teachers all semester and absolutely blew us away at the Concert. Thank you to Aron Lyon for organising such an amazing event for the students, thank you to all parents, friends and teachers who came to support the students on the night and thank you to the tech crew for your amazing work at making our musicians so professional. A great way to end the term.
