As mentioned in the Week 4 Key Messages at St John Paul II College, one of our core philosophies is to develop self-regulation within our students. It is our goal to foster students' self-awareness, self-discipline, maturity and resilience in order to develop lifelong learners. Academic progress and pastoral care are consistently at the forefront of conversations between parents and carers and the College staff however, a less discussed topic that is equally as important as learning, is the health dimension linked with wellbeing. In regards to wellbeing, much of the recent media attention has been focussed around improving mental health however, more broadly having a healthy lifestyle is crucially important to adolescents' overall health. Healthy lifestyle behaviours are positive attitudes practiced daily by an individual including good nutrition, adequate rest, regular exercises, adequate water intake, good environment, self-control and even interpersonal relationships, however, unhealthy lifestyle behaviours are defined as attitudes that deteriorate health due to acquired incorrect or incomplete information as well as observations. To obtain a healthy life, individuals have to control their own behaviour, make better decisions, and cope with negative situations, hence the link back to self-regulation.
Some interesting facts have been published from a recent Year 7 Health Survey within the ACT which include;
- 57% of students reported they ate fast food 1-2 times during the week before the survey
- Majority of students had some form of breakfast however, 13% of respondents did not eat breakfast.
- Only 30% of respondents completed the recommended 60 minutes daily of physical activity
- 17% of students reported they woke up during the night to use an electronic device on one or more days in the week prior.
- 35% of students met the recommended daily sleep requirements, and 65% of students reported not getting enough sleep.
Although 48% of students reported that their health was ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ the data in this report highlights the importance of making appropriate choices when it comes to health and leading a healthy lifestyle. Particularly as the impacts of the last couple of years are beginning to lift, regular exercise, adequate sleep and good nutrition are all integral to leading a healthy lifestyle in order for greater success in learning and overall wellbeing.
Some of the positive impacts of leading a healthy lifestyle will be discussed in the ‘Building Healthy Lifestyles Wellbeing Workshop' facilitated by our St John Paul II College counsellors.
This session will be presented next Wednesday 24th August 2022, and we strongly encourage families to be involved in this presentation to support lifestyles within our community. ***** Insert Link

THANK YOU - After School Traffic @ The Grove Ngunnawal
THANK YOU
On behalf of the Residents at the Grove, I just wanted to convey my thanks to the parents and students for your prompt action with regard to the message below.
We greatly appreciate your consideration.
Kate Bower
Senior Village Manager – ACT – The Grove Ngunnawal
The number of vehicles using this small street as a parking and pickup point for students from JPC is becoming increasingly more dangerous every day.
Vehicles are now often blocking the entry and/or exit of the Village and creating dangerous situations for the children walking to the cars and the resident's ability to enter and exit the village in a safe manner.
If you have been using the entrance to The Grove as a pickup point, we ask that you cease using this area immediately.
Parents are encouraged to make alternate arrangements for collecting their students eg. from Casey shops (accessed by students through the underpass) or in the parking area of the Nicholls Playing Fields.
Many thanks for your cooperation and consideration of our neighbours.
Regards
Catherine Rey
On Wednesday night JPC hosted the Year 10 Social. After a slow start on the dancefloor, there were some electric moves from a number of our students in particular some Year 10 boys. The party theme was a huge hit and it was great to see our Year 10 cohort come together as a large group to enjoy the night.
Special thank you to Year 10 student Agampreet Mann who led the initiatives along with Mrs Bramham for the night. The Year 10 students would also like to thank Kate Parker and her team in the canteen for the food provided on the night.

ASC Netball
Students from Years 7-12 competed in the ASC Netball Gala day this past Tuesday. Despite a frosty start, the girls were enthusiastic and keen to get on the court. There was fierce competition across all year levels, with strong on the body contest and hard-fought games. The girls displayed excellent sportsmanship against tough competition and most importantly had a lot of fun.

Dear JPC Community,
On Thursday 18 August a beloved Whippet called Marti was injured by a car near JPC and is currently missing. Marti has not been taken to any vets.
If you have any information or become aware of any sightings of Marti, please let the College Office know so we can contact the owner.
Marti is very timid but good-natured. He was wearing a blue collar and is micro-chipped.
Thank you for your help in advance.
