A Wakeup Call in Empathy - Feedback Summary
2020 Yr 9 Refugee Immersion 2020
Last week, our Year 9 students took the opportunity through our RE program to immerse themselves in a day experience as a refugee (see Week 9 Key Messages for the story).
It is the most incredibly influential and potentially life-changing school ‘camp’ experience in which I have been involved in over 25 years of teaching, across many educational sectors. Its positive impact on students and teachers is not to be underestimated - the effect goes far beyond simply developing empathy for the refugees. Students and teachers have come away from this experience knowing themselves more deeply after having their physical, mental, emotional and relational limits challenged.
Students were put in situations where they had to advocate for themselves, fend for themselves and work together in family groups to respond to adversity over a 1 day with persistence, resilience and positivity in order to get through it - just as refugees do all day, every day, sometimes with no end in sight.
To the students who are less confident, anxious, timid, shy, not lovers of the outdoors or physical activity:
YOU are the ones of whom we are MOST proud! You came along knowing that this would be hard and that you would be pushed to your limits, but you still showed up, embraced the day and you have come out the other side better people for it. I hope YOU are as proud of yourselves as we are.
The feedback from the students is OVERWHELMINGLY positive and re-affirms that the goals of event were not just met, but exceeded beyond measure. Please see a snapshot of some of their comments below.

Feedback from Year 9 students:
- I feel educated and empathetic. the refugee camp was intense and I feel as if I have a better understanding of what refugees go through, but I know what we went through was nothing in comparison.
- I believe I have gained quite obviously more of an understanding and on a level, a thicker skin. I think my realisation of the harsh conditions made me want to toughen up
- I also realised how lucky I am, though I may not always show it I am very grateful. but this experienced made me want to have more gratitude.
- I have gained appreciation, for food, shelter, love, and a safe place that i call home. It is unfortunate that people live without this, but we can help them by donating or even praying.
- This experience had made me realise how fortunate and lucky I actually am, and how I have taken a lot of things in my life for granted. I think it exceeded my expectations because at the start I was expecting it to be just a day filled with hiking, but in actuality, it’s a day that has helped me to develop my teamwork skills, and it has guided me in gaining a new perspective on what it’s really like for refugees around the world.
- This refugee experience was an eye-opening one.
- I believe I have gained many things from this experience such as how lucky and privileged I am to live the life I live.
- I gained bravery by challenging myself
- I didn't realise how spoiled I was until this point and I think I will look at my life a little different after today.
- I'm going to put a bigger effort into focusing on the good rather than the bad in my life, especially after watching that video, because the people in terrible situations still managed to show happiness
- I will remember this for a long time.
- What gained from this experience is how fortunate I am about living in Australia and its benefits. How I can come home to a warm house and bed with nourishing food to eat.
- Additionally, I feel I have gained closer connections to those who were in my group, developed skills which are useful to working with people I don't know and have a greater sense of community.
- I was scared that I wasn't going to be able to stay mentally strong throughout this experience and that I was going to breakdown. There were many times where that fear was challenged but I tried as hard as I could to stay strong - and I did. I feel as if I am now more mentally strong then I was before this experience.
- I have gained so much knowledge form this experience. I learned how to be grateful. that was the most important things. to be grateful for everything I have, from big-to-small.
- I think I have learnt how fortunate we are to have the facilities and resources that we use each day. As a person who showers twice a day, I cannot understand the filth that refugees might have had to experience due to the condition that they are given and the resources that they are allowed to utilise
- I was glad that we couldn't choose our groups because I think the experience wouldn't have been the same if we did.
- I feel this gave me a wake up call that I can use to help people out in any way I can.
- More empathy for refugees as there situation would be even worse than that and I couldn’t imagine that. I also really just realised how lucky I am to be Australian and to be that small amount of percent of people in the world who live life to there fullest and I shouldn’t take that for granted.
- This experience exceeded my expectations! I've learned quite a lot from this immersion.
- I did not like being pushed out of my comfort zone as far as they did but I definitely glad that it happened.
- I thought I wasn't going to be in a group with my friends but I actually had a lot of friends and made a lot of new friends.
- It showed me i don’t constantly need my phone to check the time, it’s okay to not know.
- I have (gained) many survival skills.
- Through this experience, I think that I have been motivated to try and do my part to help all of these people.
- I have gained a respect towards a lot of my peers as well.
- From the return you realise how lucky you truly are.
- I'm actually feeling really ashamed about the way I acted yesterday. I realised how lucky I am to be able to complain about those things….the reflection today helped to consolidate and finalise those feelings, thoughts and experiences.
- I never thought I’d feel this helpless. I am taking away a life changing attitude, sympathy and much more understanding. Feeling grateful for things that I should be, realising how much freedom I have and knowing that my life could have been that way.
- I shouldn’t be complaining about not getting what I want.
- This made me want to go on a mission trip so I can do my part to make others who are in tough situations smile even though it isn’t fixing their situation it can help for that moment in time and I think that that is important.
On Wednesday the 16th September, hospitality students across year 10,11 &12 participated in the creation of an Italian lunch. The lunch was hugely successful serving 30 seniors and staff members. The lunch consisted of a three-course meal and a non-alcoholic drink, which was well received. Student run and led by Nicholas Hannemann, this being the first wholly student-run restaurant and a great initiative we will continue into the future.
A huge thanks to everyone who came along to support the hospitality team!

The Year 7 classes have been working hard in Health this term learning about the different nutrients in foods and how these benefit the human body. For their assessment task, students were asked to create a Healthy Snack for either a person who was anxious about exams, who played sport every afternoon or who had the common cold as well as explain how the nutrients in their snack would help their chosen person. All the Year 7 teachers were super impressed with the creations that the students came up with and thoroughly enjoyed eating them! Well Done Year 7

On Wednesday, the 23rd of September the year 9 Chinese classes went on an excursion to the Scholar Dickson to experience Chinese food at a Chinese restaurant. We tried a wide variety of authentic Chinese dishes including pork buns, lobster dumplings, spring rolls, egg tarts, chow mein, fried rice and more! After the restaurant, we were able to visit Chinese grocers and bubble tea places around Dickson. The food was extremely delicious and overall, it was a great experience.
我非常喜欢中国食物。我们吃了饺子,包子,面条,和炒饭。饺子和包子太好吃了!
It was with much enthusiasm that the inaugural year 12 Lazer Tag event took place on Thursday night.
The event was well organised by the student leadership team and under the strict control of the UN peacekeeping force led by Mr Mitchell, Ms Donoghue and Mrs Walsh. The variety of activities that were engaged in were fair, above board and aligned with the UN charter of human rights!
The activities took place on the top floor of Courage wing where classrooms were won and lost, all as a fight for free and meaningful education.
The canteen ladies Kate and Sam provided sustenance for all troops in the Mess Hall and all devices used during the evening were maintained and organised through the technical officer Jono.
The camouflage used across the evening was so authentic, a number of students almost had to sleep in the college overnight as they could not be located!
This was a wonderful community experience that was well enjoyed.
The year 12's would like to thank Mrs O'Meara for the wonderful opportunity.
It is suggested that other training exercises maybe consider in the new year.

On Wednesday two JPC helpers went over to Holy Spirit (HSP) to help with our Defence Group activity. Cupcake decorating is always very popular at HSP and I was very grateful to Georgia and Mia assisting with the little ones’ colourful decorations. They were also the official taste testers – because we always need them!
Our Remembrance Day project is progressing well. Keep an eye out in next term’s Key Messages when we will share stories from some of our families’ involvement during World War II. Thank you to all the JPC families who have sent in information on your relatives already. If you have not received confirmation from me, please let me know. We want all families to be remembered.
