Message from Jacob Knowles - Assistant Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week the Church celebrated the Feast Day of St James (Monday 25 July). James was one of the Twelve Apostles and lived with Jesus during his earthly ministry. James, along with his brother John, was a fisherman who left his family to follow Jesus after an encounter with him on the Sea of Galilee. He was present during the transfiguration of Jesus and also remained with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane before he was crucified. James took the Gospel across Israel and the Roman Kingdom and spent nearly forty years in Spain spreading the Word of God. In 2006, Pope Benedict XVI provided the following observation of St James:
“…we can learn much from St James – promptness in accepting the Lord’s call even when He asks us to leave the “boat” of our human securities, enthusiasm in following Him on the paths that He indicates to us over and above any deceptive presumption of our own, readiness to witness to Him with courage, if necessary to the point of making the supreme sacrifice of life.”
St James stands as an example of unwavering adherence to Jesus. He was not without fault and lived his faith as an ongoing learning experience. In the decision to follow Jesus, like St James, we are reminded that even in times of struggle we are on the right ‘path’.
As we come to the end of a busy second week of Term Three it is pleasing to note that we are entering in to the final part of winter. Soon we will see the first signs of spring with the joy of new life. Already the days are feeling warmer (once the cool morning air and frost disappears) and students are enjoying being outside during break times and being with their friends.
I would encourage you to take the time to read through the Key Messages articles included below. These highlights the many fantastic areas that make our community such a special place.

This week in Calligraphy Club we were introduced to Bullet Journaling. Some members of the Calligraphy Club are already keen bullet journalists and have brought their journals to our sessions to share their wonderful ideas and creations. It is so wonderful to see the creativity our students have and their willingness to share this with their peers. Next week we will continue on our monthly and yearly planning, integrating our goals set in mentoring!
Miss Johanna Cusack, English and SOSE Teacher
Although her piece of work did not fit the poster theme, we acknowledged the time, effort and talent needed to create such a beautiful piece.
Hannah will be awarded a special prize for her contribution to the NAIDOC day celebrations.
Well Done Hannah!
Academic Awards Ceremony, Semester 1 2022
The Academic Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday 4 August 2022.
Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, we cannot have parents attend onsite but we will be filming the event and will send the link to view the ceremony to families who have a child receiving an award.
Please note that students receiving an award will be notified through PC groups and will have a rehearsal in P5, Wednesday 3 August.
An email will be sent to the families of those receiving an award. We are unable to indicate the award your child is receiving until the time of the ceremony.
Yr 7-12 Assessment Calendar Semester 2, 2022
Assessment Calendars for Semester 2, 2022 are now available on the website for all Year groups:
Year 11 & 12 ATAR estimates for Tertiary students
Students and their families should have now received their ATAR estimate. While this may bring some excitement and motivation for some students, for others there may be some disappointment. It is recommended that students work with their mentors to establish some S.M.A.R.T goals and create a plan of how (such as additional study) they will achieve these. Additionally, students are encouraged to continue to work hard during Years 11 & 12. Every semester is equally important and you may well be able to ‘bump out’ a low score from an earlier semester in your best subjects.
If you did not receive this, please speak to your son or daughter in the first instance. Alternatively, please contact the College.

Work Experience Review – Albert David - Cyber Security and Robotics @ Australian Signals Directorate (ASD)
I took this work experience because it's within my interest in Information Technology furthering my knowledge and skills within topics I study at school. And doing this I believe will give me an eye opener to careers I want to do in the future. An aspect of the work experience I enjoyed the most is gaining more skills in programming and applying that in cyber security. With that, we learnt concepts of cyber security and learn how to hack ethically.
This work experience was valuable to me as it gives me an understanding of how some workers work in the ASD day by day separated on their roles however when worked together becomes one team to combat issues that are happening on a national scale regarding cyber safety. The new skills and knowledge that I've developed are all programming hacking related and collaboration. I'm not going to spoil too much so if you want to know more, you should apply!
This work experience has given me insight on exploring careers surrounding on Information Technology and since I've enjoyed new things and meeting new friends, I would like to take a career pathway surrounding Cyber Security even if it's not for a government agency since nowadays literally every company has a website and those websites new cyber security specialists to secure and protect vital data from the hands of foreign intelligence of another country or even just day-by-day grey or black hat hackers trying to hack for their own personal gain.

FUTSAL Results
9/10 Boys Futsal
The JPC Futsal teams travelled to the far South depths of Fadden on Tuesday to play in the ACT School Titles. The under 16 boys comprising of Tana Bvirakare, Charlie Rae, Noah Hewitt, Gabe Taurasi, Joel Obeng, Cadel Zwangobani and Edan Pfeiffer (GK) represented the College with aplomb. The boys skilfully dispatched Queanbeyan High first up (4-0) to get the day started. Unfortunately, they followed this win with losses to strong Canberra High and Radford teams. After placing third in the pool, the boys tried hard but our lack of subs showed as tiredness set in and we were bundled out at the Quarter Final stage by a strong Erindale team, the eventual competition winners. Well played to all of the boys and congratulations to Cadel, Tana, Noah and Joel for being invited to trial for the ACT Futsal team. Thanks to Mrs Jewell for organising the event and to the girls Futsal teams for their support.

9/10 Girls futsal
What a week for girls soccer at JPC, after the success of the Bill Turner Trophy and the girls winning their way through to the last 8 of that competition we had huge strength in depth for the ACT futsal titles on Tuesday this week. We entered 2 teams, and both had huge strengths across the court. The red team worked hard in their pool and had some tough competition in the eventual winners Canberra High. They worked hard and demonstrated some excellent teamwork making it out of the group stages into the quarter-final, where unfortunately they were beaten by a strong CGGS team. Lacey Pavier Jones volunteered to play in goal as a year 7 student in a 9/10 competition, and played very confidently throughout, making some excellent saves.
The white team cruised into the Semi-final, winning many of their games convincingly, however coming up against the same CGGS team in the last round of the pool games Drawing 2-2. They then won their quarter-final 8-0 but unfortunately were beaten 1-0 in a very close Semi Final by Canberra High. Every player on the team took a turn playing Goal Keeper which for some was very far out of their comfort zone, since our regular keeper Georgia Ritchie picked up an injury at the weekend, and had to play her role as a manager and photographer for the day! The whole of the white team received invitations to the ACT futsal trials in the coming weeks.
Overall an awesome day, showcasing the best that JPC has to offer on the soccer field but a disappointing end result. It was an absolute pleasure to see these girls in action!
Great job!
