Year 7 Religious Education at JPC have commenced a unit on prayer for this semester.
This gives them an opportunity to explore the spiritual heritage of the college and to explore the different ways they might engage in personal and communal prayer.
In their first lesson, they were introduced to the rosary and thanks to the donations of hundreds of beads and World Youth Day crosses from Ms Doherty’s mum, they were all able to make their own set of rosary beads.
On Tuesday, they learned the Hail Mary, the Fatima Prayer, the Our Father, the Glory Be, the Apostles Creed and the Hail Holy Queen, and they will be working through various other types of prayer throughout the semester.
Types of prayer they will be introduced to include Ignatian contemplation, Franciscan prayer, Christian meditation, Benedictine prayer and much more. They will have the opportunity to plan their own liturgies and retreat experiences and learn about the sacraments of initiation in the church.
As part of their religious education at JPC students are also introduced and exposed to other faiths and spiritualities and encouraged to learn from and respect all traditions and people.

RE Teacher
Our school is participating in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which is taking place in Australian between 18 July and 9 September 2022.
PISA is an important part of the National Assessment Program in Australia, which is the measure through which governments, education authorities and schools can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes. All Australian Education Ministers have agreed to Australian schools’ participation in PISA, which is reflected in the Australian Education Act 2013.
International assessments provide a wide range of valuable information for education policy and review in Australia and overseas and also enable Australia to consider the performance of our education system compared with others.
Since the first PISA assessment involving 32 countries in 2000, the survey has continued to raise interest amongst educators and policy-makers world-wide. In 2022, Australia will be one of over 85 countries participating in PISA with around 15,000 students (from around 800 schools) representing our country.
What will PISA mean for our school?
A random sample of 15-year-old, mostly from Years 10 and 11, will be sampled to complete a two-hour computer-based assessment consisting of mathematics, science, reading, and creative thinking. These students will also be asked to complete a questionnaire.
A random sample of teachers will be asked to compete an online questionnaire which will collect information on classroom instruction, teachers’ educational backgrounds, training, and teaching experiences.
As an international assessment, every participating school and student has an important role in showing the rest of the world what Australia can do.
ACER will provide our school and participating students with a certificate, recognising our contribution. Each student will also receive access to the Insight video series.
It may seem early, but we are already looking to determine our electives for Years 9 and 10 for 2023.
This will be a two-stage process:
- Students currently in Years 8 and 9 will nominate eight (8) preferences for the four (4) Electives that they will take next year. This data feeds directly into the creation of the 2023 timetable. Student selections determine if specific electives run and how many classes of each elective are filled, limited by the availability of specialist rooms and teachers.
- Allocations will be communicated to students who may then request a change, dependent on space and other student movements. This will occur in Term 4.
There should be no movement of students between electives once the 2023 school year commences.
Given the timetable is created around student selections, it is important that students consider their choices and discuss carefully with their parents or caregiver. It should also be noted that there are no pre-requisites moving into Senior College (Years 11 and 12). Students are highly encouraged to select broadly and experience a variety of subjects. Many electives have two units on offer that, depending on student choice, can allow keen students to effectively choose to complete a year-long subject, or to take one in Year 9 and another in Year 10.
Students will be emailed their login details for Web Preferences on Friday of Week 1 and they will be instructed to select eight (8) preferences. Ideally, students will be allocated their first four (4) preferences, however, some lower preferences will need to be allocated; these should be carefully considered when selecting. No student will be allocated an elective that they have not chosen. Students who do not make their selection by the deadline may be allocated to the available spaces once the timetable is created.
Term 3 Week 1, Friday 22 July: Web Preferences open to students to select electives – unit descriptions can be accessed through this program.
Term 3 Week 3, Monday 1 August: Web Preferences closed to students.
Term 4: Publication of allocations to students; one-week opportunity to reselect two (2) electives.
Kind Regards,
Jessica Stokman

ACT U14 Futsal
The U14 Boys went to the ACT Futsal titles on Thursday. JPC was lucky enough to have 2 Teams and both worked hard in the group stages to qualify for the quarter-finals. JPC RED unfortunately were knocked out by Mount Stromlo but worked super well as a team throughout the tournament.
JPC BLUE sailed through their quarter, semis and then won the final convincingly 5-2, meaning they were crowned ACT champions. They go on to represent ACT at the National Futsal Titles in Brisbane later in the year. An awesome day of Futsal from all involved and a big thank you to Mr Thomas for coaching with me.

Katrina Fanning 9’s - Gala Day
Thursday 21 July
Wet, windy and cold day, however, that did not stop our JPC girls going out and competing in the Katrina Fanning 9’s Rugby League Gala day. Our first match was against SFX, where we convincingly won 22 – 0. From our first game, the girls had confidence coming into playing against Daramalan. The game was try for try with the final score, an 18-all draw. Erindale was the third game; this brought our first loss of the day 4-20. Our last pool game was against UC Kaleen High, needing a good for and against score the girls played hard and came away with the win 22 – 0. Waiting anxiously on the sideline we needed SFX to win against Daramalan to put us in the Grand Final. SFX narrowly won by 2 points on the bell.
The girls were nervous, tied and their mindset low due to playing against an undefeated Erindale side in the final; It took all we had in the energy basket to go back to play the basics and have confidence in our ability to play as a team. I asked the girls to play as if it was their last, pushing through the start of the game, they played amazingly, moving the ball in sync and playing eyes up seeing a quick pace Alina Roberts scored the first try. Their confidence lifted and they continued to play great football. The hard runs up the middle of the field from Izzy Elgood, Sienna Gerstenberg and Jadya Danilczak gave us a good lead back into our half allowing the quick and agile Frankie Cappello to move the ball quick into the hands of Olivia Sharp and Reese Paunovic to put Alina Roberts in for the second try. Erindale scored 2 quick tries which put them in front 8-10, however, the girls fought back scoring just before half time putting us in front 14 – 10. Erindale fought hard but the great defence from Kayla Lemmon and Inara Vowels held them out. We had three Year 8 students who came out on the day and mixed in well with the team. Obviously playing up a level, the senior girls supported the development of their game throughout the day, each playing small amounts of time but gaining the opportunity to play.
Thank you to Nikola Anastasi who came to assist in coaching and motivated the girls to victory.

Girls Bill Turner Trophy
What a fantastic achievement from our Girls Bill Turner Trophy Team today, in defeating Wollongong’s St Mary Star of the Sea College at Sir Ian McClennan Park in Wollongong, in the Round of 16. The result sees the girls progress to the quarter-finals of this nationwide prestigious school knockout competition.
As has been the case in all the games that the girls have played until this point, they have been demonstrating a fantastic level of teamwork and footballing skill and have displayed a super bond as a group.
Goalscorers today were Alina Roberts (2), Reese Paunovic and Laura Watt.

Hockey - Trip to New Zealand
Last year Olivia Savage, Year 7, Kennedy made the ACT hockey u13 national team as one of the younger players in the squad to represent ACT in Hobart. Unfortunately, this didn’t go ahead due to covid.
However, earlier this year Olivia was offered a spot in the u14 team with a mixture of NSW and ACT hockey players to go to New Zealand over the holidays to compete against some of the top NZ teams. This was a very successful trip with Olivia & her fellow Aussie team taking a smashing win in the GF 5-0 after 3 tournament days.
Olivia is lucky enough to be mentored and coached weekly by former Kookaburra Glenn Turner and while in NZ she was coached by former hockeyroo player Kalindi Commerford
Fantastic Work Olivia!
