Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you!
As Term 2 comes to an end, I would like to thank you all for your patience and support through what has been a difficult time.
Many of us have suffered from COVID and this has caused significant disruption to our families, our students and our staff. We have been fortunate at JPC that we have been able to remain open, largely to the generosity of our staff, who have gone above and beyond to cover for each other. We have also been fortunate in having loyal casual relief staff who have also been very generous in working with us.
I am acutely aware of how disrupted the term has been to you as parents, with industrial action and pupil free days. Again I thank you for your understanding with these. The pupil-free days have enabled staff to catch up on work they have not been able to complete due to the increased workload. They have also enabled us to do valuable professional learning to improve our teaching practice and hence the experience of school and the outcomes for our students.
Term 3
We have just been informed by Catholic Education that they have decided to schedule two further pupil-free days for Term 3 – on Friday of Week 3 and Friday of Week 8. As you are aware, we also have a professional learning day scheduled on Monday 18th July. We will work to minimise the disruption to learning of the two extra days and keep you informed of arrangements for those days.
Semester 1 Reports
The Semester 1 Reports will be emailed to families tomorrow. I would like to suggest that you discuss these with your young people and encourage them to reflect on where they are at in their learning. The Growth Mindset outcomes are particularly useful in terms of reflecting on the effort that they are putting into their schoolwork and their attitude toward learning. So, at least as important as the grades achieved in particular subjects, are the qualities that students bring to their learning. Talking through with your student what each of these skills and qualities looks like, which ones their teacher feels they do well and which ones could be improved on could help them focus on a goal for learning for next semester.
With every best wish for a restful break and some special family time in the weeks ahead.

Transition Week Reflection and Retreat
On Wednesday, Year 10 students had the opportunity to step out of the busyness of school and life, to contemplate their futures. They were challenged to consider their future, and how well positioned they are to develop personal attributes which will enhance their futures, including their faith formation and relationship with God, others, and with themselves, at school, in the workplace, and in life.
Starting with the inimitable Dr Suess and his tale of encountering the future and all that it may hold, the day also used a reading from the Book of Matthew, encouraging them to be the salt and the light – that, as they move into the world, they have the opportunity to be the salt that enhances what is around them, and to be the light that guides the way for others.
Students were physically, spiritually, emotionally and mentally challenged, and reflected upon their response to those challenges. With input from Ame, the JPC school counsellor, students also practiced problem-solving strategies that they can implement as they encounter more complex problems in their futures. The day culminated in a ritual where students identified what was holding them back from being their best versions of themselves, and then burning those fears as a symbol, readying them to move forward to the future.
As NAIDOC week is from the 3rd to the 10th of July, JPC students created some amazing works of art for the JPC NAIDOC Poster Competition, to be judged in Week 20, with the theme of GET UP, STAND UP, SHOW UP. The posters were judged on Wednesday the 29th June.
There were a number of outstanding entries but Ayra Azizi’s, (Yr 8, Kennedy) poster was judged to be the winner. Congratulations!! We hope she enjoys the beautiful NAIDOC hoodie that will be presented at the beginning of Term 3.
NAIDOC Mass
JPC First Nations students and staff will be attending the St Christopher’s Cathedral Parish NAIDOC Mass on the July 22 at 9:45 am.
Photography Media 9/10 Elective
This semester has seen our students take on tasks ranging from, creating their own gallery of photographs in the genre of Street Photography during an excursion to civic, to creating their own Music Video, and finally documenting their learning process as an ongoing portfolio of their work by creating their own blog or website. They have demonstrated enthusiasm, engagement and some excellent skills throughout. It has been a pleasure to see.
As a final task for the semester, they created a trailer of their experience of the elective.
Congratulations on a great semester of work.

Last Wednesday, 22 June, the Year 10 French students went on an excursion to Palace Cinema to watch La Brigade, a feel-good French film about the immigrant experience in France, as well as its culinary culture. After the film, the group walked to the ANU campus to have lunch at La Baguette where they were able to purchase a baguette sandwich or quiche for lunch with an Orangina. The staff also spoke French, allowing the students to order their lunch in French. A special treat was a chat with the manager, a French-Algerian, who spoke about his life in France and the food he prepares at the café. The final class of the semester for these students finished with a game of Pétanque on the oval, a French game similar to lawn bowls. Quel merveilleux semestre!

Transition Week
Congratulations to all of the Year 10 students involved in the Transition Week program! They were given a lot of new information to prepare them for college and to consider their future pathways.
Students engaged in a variety of careers modules learning about the Subject Selection, JPC Careers Website, Personal Strengths and Careers and Workplace Rights! They were also able to explore future study options by attending excursions to ANU, CIT Reid and Bruce, Uni of Canberra, Australian Catholic University and the Academy of Interactive Entertainment. The University of Canberra visited JPC and ran study skills and time-management sessions for students. Students can access all of the resources for the week from the Transition Week Moodle page.
On Wednesday, Ms Macgregor ran the Y10 Retreat with the Dr Seuss theme “Oh the places you will go”, with students exploring their role in their future decisions.
As always, the JPC Careers website has a wealth of resources that may be useful for discovering different pathways and careers. https://jpc-careers.com/
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our staff who took time out of their day to present the modules, attend excursions and support the students in their subject selection choices.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE QKR PERMISSIONS FOR EACH EVENT
School Sports ACT
We have had a number of students trial and make selections for the School Sports ACT teams in a number of sports. Just a reminder that students are required to complete the form to nominate. It is also important that you let me know if you have put yourself forward for selection as the school must give permission in order for a student to be included in the team. This should be done ASAP in order to prevent hold-ups in the process.
A final reminder that it is a privilege to represent JPC at our sporting events and students are expected to be consistently demonstrating high levels of behaviour and organisation across all classes in order to be considered for our sporting teams. This includes being prepared, organised (with PE uniform) participating in PE lessons. Students who are not consistently demonstrating this will not be considered for sporting teams.
If there is a sport that you cannot see on our calendar and you would like to participate in please email me (danni.jewell@cg.catholic.edu.au). Our aim is to provide as many sporting opportunities as possible to our students.
Many thanks for a great term!

Bill Turner Soccer
A huge congratulations to the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy teams, boys and girls, who are winners of the ACT and South NSW area and have both qualified for Area finals. The girls will head to Wollongong on Friday 22nd July to play St Mary Star of the Sea College, and the boys head to the area final tournament in Albury on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd August. A huge thank you to Mr Woodman who has coached both the boys and girls team so fantastically.
You can follow their progress and results on the Bill Turner website https://www.billturnersoccer.com.au
No Card = No Service
From Term 3, all students who do not have a Student ID card will not be served until the second half of each break, as it slows down service.
Students with no card or a temporary card will be served as follows:
- Lunch 11:40
- Recess 2:20
If you have lost your ID card, a replacement card can be ordered at the college office for $8.00.
Any student who has not had a card issued because they have not had a school photo, needs to see Mrs Bramham (Student hub) for a photo, then a card will be ordered.
Thank you
