This week, our Senior Outdoor Education class went to the lovely Booroomba Rocks area to prepare us for future wilderness journeys. The same area has been used by the Ngunnawal people for thousands of years as a testing ground to turn young men into strong and resilient adults. This was demonstrated by the senior outdoor education team as they embraced the Australian nature and gained confidence throughout the walk.

Year 9/10 Street Photography Excursion to Civic
This week the 9/10 and Senior Photographers went on an excursion to Civic with the intention of practicing their Street Photography and capturing some images for the 9/10 Assessment of “First World Problems”. We were extremely fortunate to time our excursion during Canberra’s Enlighten Festival, as there were even more opportunities for unique and creative composition. The students behaved impeccably and the work I have seen so far looks exciting, I am excited to see their creative master pieces in the next couple of weeks.

Student Report
On Wednesday our Photography class took a trip to the civic to explore the area and practice our skills for our first assessment Street Photography: First World Problems. We had to individually create and find our own ideas of what a first world problem would look like in a busy city, our perception of the theme, and how we illustrate it in our minds. In Civic as we walked around in pairs with different interests, gazing and observing, putting ourselves in the position of a professional photographer, encountering some of the same problems they may undergo when capturing images in public. The experiences we had allowed us to open our minds and discover our own expressions through our photographs, and also discover unique ways to describe the characteristics and stories we found in seeking the moment we captured. It also allowed us hands on time with the camera and an opportunity to express our creativity within our Portfolio of images.
The time we spent in civic taught us about how to really capture a moment in time as well as how difficult it may be as the world around you is constantly on the move, many of these skills cannot be taught sitting down in a classroom environment.
Taya and Yuhan Year 10
This lunchtime the Year 7s competed in an Interhouse Dodgeball competition organised by our College Leaders. They seemed to be having lots of fun, and the results are still to be announced. Thanks to Gaby and Derick our Courage leaders for their work in planning and organising and all of the seniors who helped out today.

Stromlo Running Festival
Very early last weekend, Adam Schranz of Year 10 Drexel had the opportunity to go cross country running with his big sister Catharina on Sunday morning for a course of 10km. They showed a lot of keen spirit to get up early and make it for their 6:30 AM start which was waved off by the awesome Robert de Castella (Australia's greatest marathon runner). Adam achieved a great time of just over an hour just ahead of his big sister and all runners were warmly greeted and encouraged by Robert de Castella. Andrew Leigh one of our local Canberra Federal politicians came 5th overall (4th in the men's category) for the 50km run held the day before. The Stromlo Running Festival also supports the Indigenous Marathon Project (https://www.imf.org.au/ ) established in 2009 by world marathon champion, Rob de Castella (In 2010 four Indigenous Australians created history as the first to run in the world’s biggest marathon – the New York City Marathon) and a well know indigenous runner Ethan Mulholland placed highly in the 50km run on Saturday and ran the final few hundred metres with the Australian Aboriginal Flag. The highest placed woman Juliette Soule, a PhD candidate in quantum computing at the University of Sydney, placed an impressive 4th in the 50km. Her research is on protecting quantum computing against errors. Diversity in running!
The Stromlo Running Festival from Saturday, 5 March to Sunday, 6 March 2022 is Canberra's biggest trail running festival, held annually at Stromlo Forest Park. The next 2022 event is being run in November 19-20, 2022: https://stromlorunningfestival.com.au/
Cross country running is a great activity for building resilience and confidence. More photos are at: https://stromlorunningfestival.com.au/photos/
