On Tuesday, our year 11 students started their 2 day conference that aims to inspire and give practical suggestions to successfully complete Y12 and recognise their individual life visions. The cohort had a day with guest speaker, Glen Gerreyn, from the Hope Institute. I was in the lucky position to spend the day with our JPC students during this event and I was impressed and very proud of the effort our students put in. Throughout the day students were challenged to explore their purpose, passions, goals and perceptions of what is true with their thought processes.
During the lunch break, I was speaking to Glen and was very surprised and proud of the students that came to speak to Glen and say ‘thank you’ for the sessions. One student came up and gave an amazing beat boxing demonstration. Many year 12 students also came up to say thanks for the talk that Glen gave last year.
Glen provided many examples of how people have overcome what they thought was impossible. Many students shared their fears, dreams and beliefs which demonstrated the bravery our students have. The sessions also discussed how life is hard but that sometimes we give up on things too soon. Glen explained that it’s important to fail, learn and improve our skills in many areas and challenged us to have a hopeful disregard for the impossible.
I am extremely grateful to have had this time with the year 11 students and I thank them for their participation and contribution throughout the day. I challenge all students to continue to read through their workbooks and reflect on the learning they took part in throughout their day with the Hope Institute.

Farewell from Vicki Walsh, DSM
Well, Defence families, this is a bittersweet Defence News as this will be my last post. 2014 saw the start of my DSM role at HSP, joining JPC in 2015 and I have had the privilege of working with your children for those years. It has been an adventure with all the wonderful excursions, conversations and activities we have fitted in together.
The ANZAC and Remembrance Day Ceremonies and events have always presented enthusiastic Defence students who were happy to participate and were proud to represent their parents. A few of the many highlights for me over the years have been
- The Human Poppy for Remembrance Day in 2017
- Remembrance Day Crosses Project in 2020
- Birrigai and AWM Excursions
- The amazing guest speakers at our Ceremonies
- Watching Defence families return to a Canberra posting and back to JPC or HSP
But of course, the best experience has been being allowed to be a small part of your children’s and your families' lives. Watching them grow into young adults with confidence, pride in themselves and resilience has been one of the many joys. When they speak with pride of being a Defence child, it demonstrates what wonderful reflections they are of their own parents.
I wish you and your families all the best as you continue to serve and guard us all. May you be safe wherever your service takes you. Signing off for the last time at JPC.
Take care.
Vicki Walsh

5000 Poppies Project Mat
This week we installed a very special piece of history in the college. During the ANZAC Centennial years, the 5000 Poppies Project were instrumental in raising awareness and honouring the spirit and memories of the servicemen and women who served in conflicts and wars. You may remember the amazing display at the AWM with the thousands of handcrafted poppies. There was also an incredible display at Parliament House with a blanket of poppies.
These poppy mats have since travelled the world and have been displayed at various memorials and shrines. We are very fortunate to have been gifted one of these beautiful poppy mats to display at JPC as a tribute to our ADF members and their families, past and present. The mat is displayed on our theatre wall and will always be a reminder to “Honour Their Spirit”.

Moderation Day 1 - 1 March 2022
Moderation Day is an important day for teachers across the ACT to review and moderate the work of senior students. Moderation Day is a requirement for teachers to ensure grade comparability across the senior secondary sector. Moderation Day is a pupil free day (Yr 7-10 only) and no classes will be running.
Students from Years 7-10 are encouraged to use the day productively to work on learning tasks, assignments and general study. Students are discouraged from visiting 7-10 High Schools or Primary Schools, as their presence can prove very disruptive to the learning of these students.
All Y11 and 12 students completing a tertiary package will have an AST practise at JPC. Students involved in this are asked to arrive at 8:45 am for a 9am start in the College Hall.
All Y11/12 tertiary students are required to attend as these practice tests will be marked and feedback for improvement will be given to the students. This process is vital for experience and improving our AST results as a College and to set our students on a strong path to achieve their best ATAR results possible. Students are to be in full College uniform on the day and are able to make their way home after the trial is completed (1:45 pm). Please bring lunch/ snacks for the day and a bottle of water.
Students will need to bring a pen, highlighter, calculator and pencil.
