Hospitality students hosted a rustic French-style lunch on Wednesday 19th August, for JPC staff and senior students. They served Citron Presse French lemonade with Lemon Myrtle, Classic French Onion Soup and Lemon Thyme Apple Tarte Tatin. All dishes contained ingredients grown in our school garden.
Due to Covid-19 we have had fewer practical learning experiences and were unable to open this restaurant to outside visitors. In spite of this, the restaurant was a success and we are very grateful for the support of JPC staff and students who attended, providing the opportunity for the hospitality students to practise and the feedback for improvement.
Many thanks to all involved for their support, especially Megan, Natasha and Anne.

The year 9/10 Food Technology classes are studying a new ‘Food Marketing’ unit this semester.
Three weeks ago we made a recipe called ‘hamburgers that actually rot when left out for weeks’. We made our own burgers and also bought a MacDonald's burger to compare the difference. The students were interested (and mildly horrified) that the MacDonald's burger was still in very good shape after 3 weeks, compared with our home-made burger which was covered in mould and very smelly!! Food for thought...

The year 7s have been learning about nutrition in their Health unit this term. They have studied macro nutrients; what they are, and the role each of them plays in our nutrition and health. They had fun this week examining and arranging food packets according to their nutritional content. Ready for their task of creating their own “Super Snack” by the end of term.

Last week John gave the students a performance before the workshop using his electric double bass and laptop to create sounds as his backing. John is also our new bass guitar teacher.
We are thrilled to be starting this new music group and give students the opportunity to try something different. If your child is interested in either the electronic music workshop or bass guitar lessons please contact Sharon Robinson Sharon.robinson@cg.catholic.edu.au for further details.

Building Guest Speakers
This week we had guest speakers at JPC who spoke about the Building/Construction industry.
First up, we had Carly from She Builds Homes (her own Building/Design company) to speak to our girls about what it’s like in a male dominated industry as well as her experience of owning her own business.
Finally, Geoff and Scott from Master Builders Association spoke to our students about Apprenticeships in Carpentry, Plumbing, Civil Construction and Building/Construction.
We would like to thank our guest speakers for taking the time to come and share essential careers knowledge with JPC students.

Science Week
You may have noticed a poppy in the front of JPC this week. This poppy was made in honour of the 75th Anniversary of VP Day which marked the end of the Second World War. This week for Science Week, the ANU had a satellite taking images over Canberra. We hope our poppy was big enough to be seen from up high!

JPC Community Council Nominations
St John Paul II College has achieved some significant milestones over the past 8 years including reaching a total of 902 students.
As part of the evolution and growth, we are looking for interested parents who would like to bring their expertise, commitment and passion to provide continued success to St John Paul II College. The College Council was established in 2013 and has made a significant contribution over this time. The Council is seeking to fill a number of vacant parent positions and ask all parents to consider how they may contribute to the College and nominate themselves to join the Council.
The College Council is your way of having a say in how the college operates and providing the College with ideas and feedback across all areas of operation. The Council is actively involved in guiding the development of the Catholic identity and character, approving governance structures and finances, ensuring the College is meeting its obligations to the parent community and working to build networks and relationships to support the College in the achievement of strategic goals.
Mrs Stephanie O’Meara and the Leadership Team in conjunction with the Catholic Education Office are responsible for the day to day operation of the College with the Council providing a governance structure, similar to that of a Board for a corporation. Working with Mrs O’Meara who is the public representative of the school, the council has responsibility for providing feedback and making decisions on behalf of the school community in relation to areas such as:
- Supporting the development of the Catholic identity, ethos and mission of the school.
- Supporting pastoral care strategies in the school community.
- Promoting the school in the local community, supporting the engagement of parents and providing feedback in relation to curriculum, activities and operational matters.
- Developing, approving and monitoring the annual budget, including school determined levies, loan commitments and the fees collection and remission policy.
The Council meets approximately every 6 weeks between 5.30 & 7.30 pm – Council members will also contribute to activities outside meetings in support of College activities – these are not onerous.
If you would like to nominate yourself for a position on the Community Council please submit your nomination form to Mrs Stephanie O’Meara via Kris.Davis@cg.catholic.edu.au by 11 September 2020.
