Message from Kathleen Garvie, Assistant Principal
This week students will be asked by each of their teachers to fill in unit evaluations for each subject. The information collected during these surveys as well as student results, help teachers to reflect and evaluate the teaching and learning that has taken place and to plan for the future. Reflection is a powerful tool for personal growth and development. Mrs Rey wrote last week about how looking back on the past semester, students too can gain valuable insights into their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. It also provides an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and acknowledge their hard work.
When results are returned to students and reports come in there are some important questions you can ask your child to help guide their reflection process:
- What were your biggest accomplishments this semester? Take a moment to celebrate your successes, whether it's improved grades, completing a challenging project, or participating in extracurricular activities.
- What challenges did you face during the semester? Discuss any obstacles your child encountered and how they overcame them. Encourage them to think about what strategies worked well and what they could do differently next time.
- Did you meet your goals for the semester? If your child had set specific goals at the beginning of the semester, help them assess their progress. If they fell short, discuss the possible reasons, and brainstorm strategies for achieving those goals in the future.
- Which subjects or areas do you feel most confident in? Identify the subjects or activities where your child felt most successful and encourage them to continue building on those strengths.
- Are there any subjects or areas where you struggled? Help your child pinpoint the areas where they faced difficulties. This will guide them to seek additional support or resources to improve their understanding and performance in those areas.
During mentoring in Semester 2, students will be asked to reflect on their achievements and re-evaluate their goals. This is because we believe that reflecting on the past and setting new goals can empower students to make the most of their educational journey. As parents, your guidance and support play a crucial role in this process.

Chill Out at the JPC Vinnies Sleep Out – 22 June!
The JPC Vinnies Sleepout will kick off at 6 pm on the 22 of June with soup and rolls, games, awareness-raising activities, and some literal and figurative chill.
Over 90 students and 15 teachers will sleep on the JPC terrace, braving the chilly Canberra weather in solidarity with those sleeping rough across Australia.
The CEO sleepout is an annual event that raises much-needed funds for the important ‘corporal works of mercy’ undertaken by Vinnies.
JPC is doing the sleepout for the 9th time, and Catherine Rey, our principal will participate in her 10th sleep out on the same evening.
Our fundraising at JPC is looking good, but we encourage students and parents to get behind these efforts so we can reach our goal of $18,000.
The cost to attend the sleepout is a suggested donation of $50 and the permission note is on Sentral. This is an amount that we encourage students to fundraise. If there is a financial hardship, please contact Ms Doherty.
Donations can be made on Qkr! or at Mrs Rey’s fundraising page.
Storage King in Mitchell has generously donated 120 boxes for staff and students to use during the sleepout and these will be recycled into a sustainable art project following the sleepout.
Breakfast will be served for the students and family members are welcome to attend the following day in the JPC canteen.
For more information, contact Ms Doherty Elisabeth.doherty@cg.catholic.edu.au or Mr Igoe Taylor peter.igoetaylor@cg.catholic.edu.au
Thank you
Ms. Beth Doherty
An intrepid group of Year 11 students travelled to Canowindra to go back in time, back to the Devonian period (360 million years ago) to explore the Age of Fishes.
The Senior Earth and Environmental Science students were tasked with discovering the fossil record, and what it can tell us about the evolution of the biosphere – all the living creatures on Earth. The fossils on display, found near Canowindra, include several armoured fish species as well as ancestors of the lungfish, all of whom perished in a single body of water and were encased in a layer of sedimentary rock.
We were able to see, and touch, the actual fossil slabs (their visible scale patterns and spines!) and see the casts taken to give a 3D rendering of the different fish species. Despite the rain, we also walked the timeline, exploring the periods before and after the Devonian, to see how conditions on Earth have changed and how life began to evolve.
Throughout the museum, we were also introduced to specific details about the different fish species, how these species evolved, and which current species can be traced back to these ancestors.

Bill Turner Cup Boys Team Make SOUTHERN NSW / ACT Area Final
A big congratulations to our Bill Turner Cup Boys Team who defeated Harrison School, 2-1 in Round 3 to progress to the Southern NSW / ACT Area Final against Eden Marine in Eden this coming Monday.
While the boys had a few keys players out and went down 1-0 early, they showed their fantastic qualities as a football team, forcing their way back for a 2-1 win, and with cracking goals and celebrations from Seth and Xavier Bonnett.
An excellent team performance all around.

ACT Cross Country
This year, I have had the privilege to attend both the ASC and the ACT Cross Country Championships with the St John Paul II College team. There has been a buzz surrounding the cross country season this year, which started with Mr McDonnell and the PE team arranging training and practise runs for students.
Kym Darmody led the way with communicating between parents, students and staff and organising for our JPC team to participate in these events. And participate they did!! We had…… students attend the ASC and …… attend the ACT carnival, which is a huge turnout.
Today, I stood on the slope and Stromlo Forest Park (as a marshall) and had the privilege of watching our students run around the course and working so hard to represent our College proudly. Well done JPC and thanks to all staff, parents and students involved.

Junior Matildas Goalkeeper
Following her international debut for the Junior Matildas against South Korea last year, a big congratulations to Year 10 Van Thuan student, Georgia Ritchie, for being involved in two key Junior Matildas overseas trips over recent weeks, to Mongolia and South Korea respectively. The trip to Mongolia incorporated the 2024 AFC Under 17 Women’s Asian Cup Round 1 Qualifiers, with the team progressing to the next stage following an 11-0 win against Mongolia and a 3-0 win against Chinese Taipei.
The trip to South Korea saw the team play two matches against South Korea at the National Team’s training base; a place which also saw Georgia have the opportunity to meet Tottenham Hotspur star, Son Heung-min, who was in camp with the South Korean Men’s Team.
Georgia has been the sole footballer from the ACT involved in these trips.
Keep up the awesome work Georgia!
I would like to remind families that students are expected to be in full school winter uniform. Staff will be monitoring uniforms to ensure that our school uniform is worn with pride and all students are in the correct attire.
Students must be in uniform and NOT wearing hoodies (this includes the JPC netball hoodies), no beanies (inside), tracksuit pants or any other modifications to the JPC Uniform.
If for some reason a student is out of uniform, students must present a letter from parents/carers to their Pastoral care teacher and House leaders.
Please refer to the student diary or the policy here if you are unsure.
Thank you
