This week I’d like to share with you some background about the design of our new logo for Mathieu House, specifically the element in the foreground, the boat.

Marie-Helene Mathieu, whom we’ve focused on in a previous edition of Key messages, is a French disability rights activist who has dedicated her life to working with people with disabilities and their families and in doing so demonstrated the highest commitment to inclusivity in her work. This inclusivity is represented in our new logo by the boat in the foreground, a simplified version of an artwork from one of her community members, a painter known as Meb.

When asked about his painting Meb replied, “We are in a boat and we are travelling together. Sometimes the sea is rough, sometimes it’s calm, sometimes you need to row, and sometimes the wind blows in the sails.” Quite a remarkable concept to be captured in painting!

The artwork formed the early emblem of the Faith and Light Community, and now we, like Larche House, have adopted this theme in our logo.
