Year 11/12 Outdoor Education Kayaking Expedition

During week 13, Year 11 and 12 Outdoor Education class undertook a kayaking expedition with Region X. We began this journey at Shallows crossing, where we learned how to safely waterproof our items and efficiently pack our kayaks. Day 1 consisted of a 12km kayak down to Bonnie Doon’s campsite. Night one was challenging, as it was our first night out of civilisation. Day 2 was an early rise, where we travelled 11km from Bonnie Doon down to Nelligen, where we were surprised with a night staying at the BIG 4 caravan park. Day 3 was challenging as we were all exhausted and hitting tough mental blocks, however, we all managed to preserve to complete another 13km down to Batemans Bay where we were met with the bus and travelled back home back to Canberra.

Quotes from students:

“Outdoor ed camp was a lot of fun, it looked like everyone was enjoying it. People were already enjoying it before we even arrived there. At first, I thought camp was going to be very, very difficult, but it turned out that it was way easier than I thought. It was still tough though.” - Nicolas Nascimento

“I enjoyed camp very much, I learnt many valuable lessons but applicable to the outdoors and to everyday life. It featured a 36 km kayak down the Clyde River spanning over 3 days, whilst carrying all of our belongings, food and equipment.” - Finn Craze

“Throughout the experience on our expedition, we participated in a 35km kayaking journey which was quite exhausting but an incredible experience. It was a new experience that built our abilities and taught us so much about what we are able to achieve". - Maddison Langfield

“Over the 3 days away, we were able to explore parts of the outdoors that we don’t get experience every day. The outdoors allowed us to connect with each other as well as work with different people and overcome some difficult situations.” - Taylah Osmond
