For many of us in Australia, life is beginning to return to normal after a difficult 2020. But around the world, many of our global neighbours are still doing it tough – and they need your support more than ever.  

The global poverty rate is expected to rise for the first time in 20 years, as COVID-19 compounds existing challenges of access to health care, clean water, sanitation, food and water security and education.  

Our closest neighbour, Papua New Guinea, is experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak that is putting a heavy strain on an already fragile health care system. 

In India, the second most populous country in the world, a resurgent second COVID-19 wave threatens to undo decades of progress in poverty alleviation.  

Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, nearly one million Rohingya refugees continue to live in crowded conditions inside the Cox’s Bazar refugee camp.

Even after the COVID-19 vaccine is rolled out globally and the virus finally contained, the disruption to livelihoods means millions of people will face poverty, unemployment and food insecurity.  

The people most impacted are those least able to withstand food shortages, loss of income and disruption to services. An estimated 40 to 60 million people will be pushed into extreme poverty as a result of the pandemic.
