Mitchell is one of our current Year 12 students who is completing an Australian School-Based Apprenticeship. He shares his insights below!
Where are you currently working and what are you currently studying?
I am doing Certificate III in Cabinet Making through a local company, Clockwork Kitchens in Mitchell one day a week and another day is at CIT.
What do you enjoy the most about completing an ASBA?
I enjoy being in a working environment with people older than me who have more life experiences. I also enjoy going to CIT and working with people who are also doing an ASBA or who are in full-time apprenticeships. It has taken me outside of my comfort zone but enabled me to become more confident.
What has been challenging about completing an ASBA?
Balancing school, work, basketball and a social life is not easy. Having to work out school schedules and trying to understand what was happening in class while I am not there has also been a challenge but the school has worked with me and my parents to help get through.
I am at basketball 4-5 nights a week which I enjoy but some of our games and training run late into the night. However, it is also a part of life so I am constantly getting used to it and I have a very good group of friends who make sure I am in touch with that side of things.
What do you hope to achieve after you finish Year 12?
I want to finish my apprenticeship and just keep working hard. Once I have done that and just enjoyed being qualified for a while I will explore the opportunities it offers me as I can go anywhere in Australia or the world and find work. But I have been saving to buy my own place which I will hopefully do within 12-18 months of finishing school. There are a few of my friends also doing trades so we might even be able to go into a business set up so we can use each other’s skills.
What advice would you give students looking to get into the cabinet-making/carpentry industry?
It is a great industry but it is hard work and often physical work. There are a lot of industry nights and industry associations which will also help. Understand what counts is what you put into it and you are in an adult environment. At times it is very repetitive work, but once you see the end result it is worth it.
